Description: Millions of aging Americans are challenged to prepare for uncertain health and financial setbacks in addition to cognitive impairment that impacts one-third of adults over age 85. Advanced planning can reduce the negative impact of impairment on personal finances, including financial exploitation, scams and fraud, and care and spending decisions that are not aligned with retirement goals. To address these issues, the SOA’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program co-sponsored work on the Thinking Ahead Roadmap which was created by a team from the University of Minnesota and Stanford Center on Longevity. As the world begins to emerge from COVID-19, what new technologies will next take root in the health care system and how will those affect medical costs? This session will review recent research from the SOA Health Section on how new technologies are spread and adopted. Particular focus will be given to emerging modes of consumer engagement and highly-focused gene and cell therapies that are breaking new ground in combating rare diseases. Description: This session explores the far-reaching changes to how clinical data will be sourced, processed and consumed in many payer use cases including risk adjustment, quality measurement, care management, claims adjudication, prior authorizations, and other payer functions. Robust, interoperable data exchange is a prerequisite for value-based care. Clinical data will be increasingly accessible to augment administrative (claims) data via standardized Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR, pronounced 'fire'), at a fraction of the cost of a accessing a traditional medical record and in real-time. On May 1, 2020, HHS issued a final rule implementing interoperability and the patient access provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016, although enforcement has been delayed into 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new regulations promote, “HHS’s vision and strategy for achieving a health information ecosystem within which all individuals, their personal representatives, their health care providers, and their payers are able to send, receive, find, and use electronic health information in a manner that is appropriate, secure, timely, and reliable to support the health and wellness of individuals through informed, shared decision-making, as well as to support consumer choice of payers and providers.”Once enforcement begins, CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), have the authority to mandate adoption of interoperability requirements, and also penalize payers and providers for non-compliance or the delay and withholding of data.This ‘digital transformation’ of the clinical data ecosystem has far-reaching implications for enabling technologies including Natural Language Processing (NLP) and entire segments of services and vendors. It will eliminate many departmental barriers, duplication and error sources for health plans and impact every department and the underlying economics of delivering and managing care.

Description: With just under 18 months to go until IFRS 17 takes effect for much of the global insurance industry, insurers are deep into their implementation journeys. There have been significant hurdles to overcome along the way, and many are now starting to test their newly-developed systems and processes through dry runs as they construct provisional opening balance sheets and income statements. The dry runs will be a key milestone for the program, but there are still significant challenges ahead. In this session, we will hear from industry practitioners, both on the direct-writer and reinsurance side of the industry, about their implementation experiences to date, where they are currently focusing their efforts, and what risks lie ahead.

Description: After a sustained period of mortality improvement, U.S. population mortality improvement has stagnated in recent years. The presenters will discuss mortality improvement trends in the U.S. population and the causes of death contributing to these trends. U.S. population cause of death trends will be analyzed and compared to trends in the insured population. Mortality rates for major causes of death will be compared between the U.S. population and the insured population. In addition, assumption setting for both older age and later duration mortality as well as mortality improvement will be covered.

Description: A Chief Actuary’s responsibilities in managing an LTC block require a strong understanding of the past and the ability to use that and emerging trends and challenges to prognosticate the future. During this session a panel of Chief Actuaries will share their thoughts about the current and future states of the LTC industry and how they are tackling their top challenges, such as COVID, LDTI implementation, regulatory changes, and their work force.
